so in the mood
02:55
|
|||
let's go
out to the races
bet on the longshot
and throw away the ticket
and leave before it's through
yes or no, i am so in the mood
let's hail
a cab by the entrance
and ask the hack to take us to
a place that we invented
and act surprised when he doesn't have a clue
yes or no, i am so in the mood
tell your boss you came down with a
case of summertime
and the only way to cure it
is to lean back in the bleachers for a while
you can be zelda
and i will be f. scott
we'll poetize over wine
and write down things that soon will be forgotten
and when the
day finally surrenders
we'll stay a little longer
and poke some at the embers
and joke about renting a room
yes or no, i am so in the mood

just give me love
03:01
|
|||
just give me love
you keep your money
i'm only looking for the intangibles honey
there's only one thing that you've got i'm thinking of
just give me love
dont want to drive your car so pretty
don't want a key to your apartment in the city
you keep your shiney rings they don't thrill me enough
just give me love
i don't have jealous eyes for all your flashy things
just a free comodity
that would make me richer than a king
just give me love
it's that simple baby
i don't give a hoot if your stocks have gone through
the roof lately
it's gonna crash you know it will it always does
just give me love
and you may have a secluded cottage on the sea
but ocean views are not the
kind of things that interest me
just give me love
you keep your money
i'm only looking for the intangibles honey
there's only one thing that you've got i'm thinking of
just give me love
i'll make a little deal with ya baby
we can have a meeting of the minds
you keep most of what you've got
and i'll keep most of mine
then we'll share the biggest part of both of us
just giving love
and you can bet i'll feel as rich as donald trump
just give me love

the manager sits at the bar
smoking his third cigarette
the racing form and his black coffee
his hands rubbing his tired head
the lights are turned down, the floor has been swept
and the tables are clear
and in a dark corner we sway to a rhythm
that only you and i hear
the orchestra is done
but i still hear the music
i still can't help moving
in your arms
the singer has gone home
but i still hear the lyrics
as we disapper in
the never ending lovers' song
the shadows we cast on the wall move like ghosts
to a forgotten beat
my hand on your back with a mind of its own moves
you closer to me
you throw your head back
you spin and you stop and you stare in my eyes
and i see every bright star that ever burned high
in any dark, velvety sky
(chorus)
the manager stands at the door in his coat
holding his keys
as we glid and step, held in the grip of a mute melody
the manager shouts as he looks at his watch
i am locking the door
but his words echo faint and drop like soft rain
drowned out by our movie score
(chorus)

we'll laugh about today
02:33
|
|||
one day we'll be
in the park or out at the movies
you'll turn to me and
laugh about today
and when we're older
living in white plains or maybe in boulder
i'll put my hand on your shoulder and
laugh about today
the spilled white zin and the misread coversation
i got a little bit sad then
you kissed my frown away
behind the curtains in the arcade camera
we held hand together and we were on our way
someday talking
by the fire there in our stockings
a little spark then
we'll laugh about today
singing gershwin right in front of everyone
everybody laughing as we went walking by
feeling the city change from day to evening
all the street lights blinking
and shining in your eyes
one day strolling
or at the lanes with some friends bowling
we'll make a little toast then
we'll laugh about today
and later on when we say goodbye
and i leave you on your doorstep under the moonlight
we'll look at each other one more time and we'll
laugh about today

stardust town
03:18
|
|||
she was by the window reading
another hopeful needing
that one big break
so i asked to sit and she let me
i'd make her not forget me
i was in love with her face
she said she had come from places unknown
to throw her dice and let 'em count
and find her place in stardust town
the sun was chased away by rain
i ordered some champaign
i would ask her name
but when i turned back she was gone
like the disappearing sun
in the gathering gray
a ran to the street, looked west then looked east
i ran up the avenue and then back down
she was on her way to stardust town
a year went by and another one right behind
and all the while i kept in my mind her face
hoping i would see her on the street
and ask her to escape with me
then i saw her face again
in an advertisement
for a hit broadway show
so i went to see her dance
and reconstruct an interrupted romance
the curtain dropped and i pushed through the mob
by the time i reached her door the lights were out
she was on her way to stardust town
she found her place in stardust town

i hold your hand and sparks shoot out
you pull away and you say ouch but
don't worry baby
that's just a lttle bit of lightnin'
i look deeply into your eyes
rockets go off and you get shy but
it's just a lttle bit of lightnin'
and lightnin' makes the gardens grow
and lightens up a dull gray sky
but oh what fun when the big storm comes and
we find a cozy place to hide
i get crazy each time we meet
my heart gets confused and skips a beat but
it's just a lttle bit of lightnin'
and lightnin's been around long before little cleo
dipped her toe in the nile
and it's been livinin' things up
since the world was a big rock pile
we walk along the clouds build up
it's ok honey we've already been struck
don't worry baby
it's just a lttle bit of lightnin'
don't worry baby
it's just a lttle bit of lightnin'
don't worry baby
it's just a lttle bit of lightnin'

i've got some 8 dollar wine
some cheese i can't pronounce
i did all the laundry
mopped every floor in the house
flowers from safeway only $7.92
and the only thing that's missin' is you
i've got my little stereo
sittin' high up on the shelf
a tape of johnny mathis baby,...who else
2 chairs out on the back porch
with a good view of the moon
and the only thing that's missin' is you
and i remember everything that you said
i got the clutch up off the kitchen floor
and put the channel blocker on espn
and i took note of all those things that you want
i put my tools back out in the garage
and threw away them shorts
with the hole in the crotch
i've got on an apron
i've got salmon on the grill
i'm using a napkin
i don't drip and i don't spill
i rented steel magnolias baby
i'll watch it all the way through
the only thing that's missin'
the only thing that's missin' is you

sky blue sky
03:19
|
|||
i see off in the distance
an oak tree and a tire swing
a little pond for fishing
and i see you and i
under sky blue skies
i hear an old mare in the stable
daisies in the jelly jar
dominos on the table
the window shines the light
of a sky blue sky
i see it all in my mind oh
i see the green grass and the umber of the dusty road
were i to draw the sky that hung over you and me
there'd only be one crayon i would need
i hear you playingthe piano
i hear you sing in perfect key
as the back yard turns to shadows
as the sun bids goodnight
to a sky blue sky
i see it all in my mind oh
i see the amber hills and the pink of a budding rose
were i to paint the sky that hung above our head
i'd only need one color in my palette
i see off in the distance
silhouettes holding hands
surrendering to kismet
wonderful as life goes by
under sky blue skies
i feel time ever clocking
and the tide that will subside
when our ship comes in for docking
and wave the crew goodbye
under sky blue skies
from then on we'll reside
under sky blue skies

when i get around to you
04:05
|
|||
my carousel sits by the sea
in the gray and the mist
still as it can be
waiting for the man to start the machinery
and let the cogs and pullies turn again
my carousel sleeps in the night
dreaming that i might
turn on his lights
but to take you for a ride all through the misty blue
is only something someday i might do
when i get around to you
my carousel is brave in the wind
refusing to rust
till it turns again
and one day you might spin with me a time or two
up and down and underneath the moon
when i get around to you
my carousel sits by the sea
hoping that i might meet destiny
and trade in my line for a circular route
and realize this is where i'm going to
when i get around to you

some things don't do you no good to fool with
like three plus three is six
and like the spring or an ernie els golf swing
she's perfect justlike she is
so don't you bother changin'
any sentance that she says
displace one word and the world becomes absurd
she's perfect just like she is
who could make the stars more amazing
could you paint a better sky
what fool would change the color of a daisy
well that's crazy
and like the mets in '69
or the way gladys knight sings it
there just ain't no way to make a longer day
she's perfect just like she is
what fool would find fault with the mountains
or rewrite shakespear's poetry
some men have tried to improve upon her aspect
but that's foolishness
and one day i'll find the nerve to tell her
that i get her
and that i'd never try to change her
'cause that's danger
and who could make the stars more amazing
could you paint a better sky
and who would change the color of a daisy
well that's crazy
she drapes her coat across her shoulder
then says goodbye through crimson lips
out down the street and world is incomplete
she's perfect just like she is
she's perfect just like she is
she's perfect just like she is
