this song is about one moment when i was a kid playing little league. i was standing in centerfield when a car pulled in blasting "goodbye yellow brick road". until then i was a pretty middle-of-the-road kid. it was at this moment that i left the center and spiraled into the unsure life of the musician.
lyrics
there once was paint on this barn
and it's all but gone
i should get to it someday
and the tractor keys are as rusty as they can be
sleeping on the window pane
but the fire is fine
for these idle feet
waiting for a chance to dream
and this old house is seeing more of me now
as i write myself to sleep
1979
i was standing in the center of center field
a car pulled up with it's radio on
and i heard elton john
the michelob sign
the last bar chair
you know there are some old boys waiting there
should i stop by and kill me another night
in the nicotene light
'cause past 11 o'clock
when the regulars have gone
i slip my dollar in
and search the list
for the captain and the kid
to save my life again
(chorus)
the geese in the sky
up so, so high
leave us earthbound souls
to gather wood and close the shutters good
and dream by the crimson coals
